Lake Thompson Youth Ice Fishing Tournament Features Sled Dogs

Nearly 120 anglers, from toddlers to teens, registered Jan 20 to take part in the second annual Future Fisherman Ice Derby on Lake Thompson.

The event is sponsored by the 4-Lakes Association and several other individuals and businesses.

The derby had been postponed from the previous week because of the extreme cold. The weather cooperated on the rescheduled date with no wind and temperatures reaching the 40s, but the fish were not as cooperative.

Ten-year-old Kaitlyn Kendall of Sioux Falls caught the only fish of the day, a 1.76 pound walleye, which earned her a first-place win. Kendall took home first choice of two different ice shacks, a heater and a fishing pole.

Other major prize winners, who with better luck, would have been decided by the total weights of the fish caught, were decided by drawing names.

Those winners include second place, Anna Avery, age 10, ice shack and pole; third place, Logan Griffith, 9, two-night stay at a North Shore Campground cabin and fishing pole; fourth place, Grace Wipf, 12, $100 Scheel’s gift card and fishing pole; fifth place, Sierra Feucht, 10, $100 cash and fishing pole; sixth place, Reagan Cox, 6, four SDSU hockey tickets and fishing pole; and seventh place, Murphy Eisenburg, 8, $50 Cabala’s gift card and fishing pole.

But even if they didn’t win one of the big prizes, each participant went home with something. Tackle boxes, fishing poles, sleds, dippers and an assortment of other items filled the prize table as organizers called one name after another until each child had received a prize.

Organizers served hotdogs, bars, hot chocolate and water.

And an additional attraction this year was De Smet native Brad Van Meter and friend Ryan Alwin, both of Watertown, and their teams of Alaskan Husky sled dogs.

Event organizers created a track for the dogs and several participants had their names drawn for an opportunity to go for a ride with Van Meter or Alwin behind a team of dogs.
